The Big Bear Discovery Center, just on the other side of Big Bear Lake in Fawnskin, is one of the most incredible experiences the mountain has to showcase. The main focus is
to provide tourists the ultimate learning experience about the history of Big Bear, and how it's become a modern day marvel of nature. Assortments of hands-on exhibits display the seeds of local
flora, so visitors can catch a close-up glimpse of the young forest. There is even an enormous tree on the premises that represents a timeline of history with its rings.
For lunchtime, the View Café offers delectable snacks and sandwiches. A picnic area invites all to dine in the great outdoors, and admire the remarkable views across Big Bear Lake. Let's not
forget the shopping experience of the Adventure Outpost featuring maps, field guides and a book on astronomy. Even better, there's talk of relocating the Moonridge Zoo into these parts, yet it's
too early to state anything definite.
If you're into birds, this area is flourishing with golden and bald eagles from October to March. Be certain to bring binoculars, if you want to catch a peep of these magnificent specimens in
their natural habitat. Additional activities include hiking, biking and camping. Every July the annual gala is held with music, entertainment and tasty vittles. Seasonal tours are also
popular: Wilderness Wildflowers, April to September; the Mother's Day Wildflower Tour; and canoe tours from May 26 to Sept 3, Fri., Sat., & Sun.
