      A small city of Uttar Pradesh, Agra, has become popular worldwide as it nestles the monument of love and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Taj Mahal. Once the seat of the great Mughal rulers for ages, it offers its treasure trove for all the tourists from India and abroad. Agra, now a sprawling industrial town, stands in testimony to the great amount of architectural activity of the Mughals.

Places to see:

  • Taj Mahal: This epitome of love in white marble is a pride of India. The Taj has contributed excessively to Agra and Indian Tourism. This poignant Mughal mausoleum was constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his second wife Mumtaz Mahal, whose death in childbirth in 1631.
  • Agra Fort: Built by Emperor Akbar in 1571, this red sandstone monument is a mixture of the Islamic and Hindu styles of architecture. Agra Tourism would be incomplete without a tour to Agra Fort.
  • Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb: It is a tomb built with white marble in the typical Islamic style architecture. Built by the Mughal Empress Noor Jahan in the memory of her father Itmad-ud-Daulah, it is one of the must-visited monuments of Agra.
  • Akbar's Tomb: The tomb of the great Mughal emperor Akbar is a mixture of many architectural styles and completely different from earlier Mughal Buildings.
  • Fatehpur Sikri: Famously known as the city of Ghosts, it was built by the Great Mughal Emperor. Fatehpur Sikri is a place worth visiting to discover how once the city could have been which has now turned into ruins.
How to reach:
  • By Air: Agra is well connected to cities like Delhi, Khajuraho, Varanasi etc through regular flights. Delhi is closest international gateway. Other nearest airport is Kheria, 6 kms from Agra.
  • By Rail: Agra is connected to the major cities in India. Total time through train from Delhi to Agra is three hours. The main railhead is the Agra Cantonment station.
  • By Road: Agra is well connected to the following cities by road -- Mathura, Delhi, Chandigarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Jhansi, Chitrakoot etc.
