      Calicut or Kozhikode is situated in the south Indian state of Kerala on the southwest coast of the Arabian Sea.

Places to see:

  • Pazhassirajah Museum: This museum rich displaying the historic past of Kozhikode is located on the East Hill, at a distance of five kms from the city. It is run by the State Archeological Department. Ancient mural paintings, antique bronzes, old coins, models of temples, and megalithic structures are on display here.
  • Art Gallery: Famous for its collection of paintings made by Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Raja Varma, the gallery attracts the art connoisseurs the most. This gallery holds an important position in the Indian art circle because of its association with Raja Ravi Varma, the first Indian painter to make use of oil colours. The paintings of this great artist generally revolve around the depiction of mythological events, royal portraits and day-to-day life.
  • Kozhikode Beach: The coastline along Kozhikode, located on the eastern part of the city, offers the leisure-seekers a long stretch of uninterrupted sandy beach. The glorious spectacle of the setting sun from this beach is most enjoyable to see. The Lighthouse, the Lions Park (children's park) and the Aquarium (a good collection of marine life and freshwater fish) are interesting places to visit on this beach.
  • Religious points: Kozhikode is a city where Churches, mosques and temples mingle. The Tali Shiva Temple (open only to Hindus), the centre of cosmic energy, built in 14th century, is an excellent example of the traditional Keralite School of temple architecture. The Kuttichira Mosque and the Church of South India should be visited. The Mother of God Church and the St Mary's Church are the most visited churches.
Other religious places worth visiting are the Fire Temple, built by the Parsi community of Kozhikode, located on SM Street; the Buddhist Vihar located on Customs Road; and the Mishkal Masjid located at Kuttichira.

How to reach:
  • By Air: Kozhikode airport is located at a distance of about 25 km from the center of the city. Kozhikode is well connected by air to Mumbai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Goa, Madurai and Chennai.
  • By Rail: Calicut is connected to all the major cities of India through rail link. The station is around 2 km south of Mananchira Square. The city is well connected by train with important places like Mangalore, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa and Mumbai.
  • By Road: Calicut is well linked with various destinations in Kerala and beyond. National Highway-17 links Calicut with the rest of the cities in Kerala and neighboring states.
