| Greenwich Village, also called the West Village, has been virtually synonymous with counterculture, bohemian lifestyles, intellectual dissent, art, and artists of all kinds for over a century. In recent years the Village has tended to become gentrified to the extent that it is now, arguably, the most expensive neighborhood in Manhattan! Fairly large gay and lesbian communities thrive here. SoHo (south of Houston, actually between Houston and Canal streets) is an upscale neighborhood with well over 200 art galleries, numerous restaurants, shops, and four museums. This is where the spacious "lofts" were originally made chic by artists in the last century (that would be the 20th). TriBeCa, or the Triangle Below Canal, where struggling artists can be found, is best known for its many restaurants and perhaps the annual TriBeCa Film Festival. As might be expected, any neighborhood with a large number of striving artists will have numerous art galleries and small theaters as well.
