The World Financial Center in New York

Published On: Dec 26, 2006
The name "World Financial Center" designates a cluster of buildings situated near the site where the World Trade Center stood until the terrorist attacks of 2001. The complex overlooks the Hudson River and houses several of the largest US-based corporations. A few notorious names that are associated with the World Financial Center are Dow Jones, the Wall Street Journal, American Express and several others.

The actual building complex was created on a landfill structure originally designed to build Battery Park City. The World Financial Center was built between 1985 and 1988, and the landfill used different materials such as ground excavated from building the WTC towers.

The 2001 terrorist attacks caused damage to the Winter Garden area of the World Financial Center complex. However, today the complex is fully operational due to significant repairs that were carried out after the attacks.

There are several buildings that create the complex, as outlined below:

One World Financial Center (1986), height 577 ft (176 m), 40 stories - situated on 200 Liberty Street, this building houses tenants such as Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft, Dow Jones & Co., Lehman Brothers, National Financial Services, Richards, Spears, Kibbe & Orbe, LLP.

Two World Financial Center (1987), height 645 ft (197 m), 44 stories - companies such as Merrill Lynch, the State Street Corporation or Thacher Proffitt & Wood, LLP are housed within Two World Financial Center.

Three World Financial Center (1985), height 739 ft (225 m), 51 stories - houses American Express, Computer Generated Solutions Inc., Morgan & Finnegan, LLP (intellectual property boutique law firm), Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) and others.

Four World Financial Center (1986) height 500 ft (152 m), 34 stories is fully rented by Merrill Lynch. Although it is the smallest of the four towers, Four World Financial Center receives full attention from thousands of people on a daily basis, as it is where most Merrill Lynch administrative offices are located.

The Winter Garden (1988) a 45,000 ft is a glass dome that shelters trendy cafes and select shopping areas, all located in a natural ambiance full of trees and ornamental plants. Here you will encounter brands such as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Eckerd, The Gap, Hallmark and Starbucks.

NYMEX building (1997) is 16 stories high and houses the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) and the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT). It is one of the busiest buildings in the complex.

The importance of the World Financial Center is high, especially since the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center Towers. The Lower Manhattan financial complex is a playing ground for major corporations only, and many financial and economical decision that affect the entire USA or even the entire financial world often initiate in the World Financial Center.
