Published On: Dec 26, 2006

New York abounds in tourist attractions and impressive buildings and museums. However, New York can brag with an intense cultural life as well. A nice theatre in the city is the August Wilson Theatre, which has hosted a lot of events and musicals over the years.
The August Wilson Theatre is located on the 245 West 52nd Street in New York. The building was designed by C. Howard Crane helped by Kenneth Franzheim. The theatre has opened as early as 1925, and was initially called the Guild Theatre.
Some important shows at the Guild were: Bernard Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra, Maxwell Anderson's Elizabeth the Queen, Lynn Rigg's Green Grow the Lilacs, or Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra.
The Guild was re-named after the famous playwright August Wilson's death in 2005. At present, the August Wilson Theatre is the place where the popular musical the Jersey Boys is being played.
The Jersey Boys is an impressive award winning musical in a documentary style. The story builds upon the life of a group member of a famous rock 'n' roll groups in the sixties. The group was called the Four Seasons and it was a real hit back in those times. The group wrote its own songs and invented an original sound, which made them unique and famous.
The Jersey Boys musical has been played for the very first time in a Broadway style in the 6th of November in 2005 at the August Wilson Theatre and has been a great success ever since.
The director of the show is Des McAnuff, who is also artistic director at La Jolla Playhouse. Many of the Four Season's hits were incorporated in the show to make the story look real and tell the story of Frankie Valli as accurately as possible.
The spectacular rise, the huge fame and all that goes along rock 'n' roll are all well put in the show, which is partly concert and partly a jukebox musical. The tunes you are going to hear must be familiar to you and include: Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Rag Doll", "Oh What a Night" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" to name but a few.
The musical won over $400,000 after the first opening day, and it was rewarded with four Tony Awards in 2006, the most impressive being the Tony for the Best Musical.
A few or the stars playing in this huge musical include the Tony Award winners John Lloyd Young and Christian Hoff as well as Daniel Reichard, J. Robert Spencer and many others.
The Jersey Boys tour in 2006 has started in San Francisco, California, but it will be played at the August Wilson Theatre as well, so make sure not to miss this fantastic Broadway show. The show will be presented in the evenings as well as in several matinees. The event is suitable for children over 7.
