Rao's Restaurant in New York

Published On: Dec 26, 2006

If you are interested in seeing a place where there are some delicious Italian dishes, you should visit Rao's restaurant in New York. This is a restaurant with tradition that has over 100 original recipes and it surely will be an attraction to many visitors, who come here not necessarily to eat, but to see the restaurant.

Rao's restaurant was first opened in 1896 in East Harlem, New York. The owner, Charles Rao, has moved from Italy and thought of opening a business in America. He purchased a small shop in Harlem, which used to be the home of the Italian community in New York. Charles Rao has changed the shop into a restaurant and kept it up till his death in 1909.

The business got into Louis Rao's hands, who was said to be a very elegant man. Next, the business was taken over in 1958 by Vincent Rao at Louis's death. Vincent has simplified the menus making them pure Italian dishes.

In 1999 Vincent Rao dies, and Frank Pellegrino gets to run the business. Frank is also a Rao relative, so the business was kept in the family. He is currently the owner of Rao's restaurant.

Surprisingly enough, the restaurant has only ten tables, so there are only few places. As a rule, the tables are bought by very well-known persons, and they get to own the tables until they die. This is the reason why this restaurant is considered to be highly exclusive. Even if the owner of the table is not using it, the table cannot be occupied by others.

Frank Sinatra bought a table at Rao's restaurant and this was one of his favorite dining places in New York. After Sinatra's death, another musician got the table. There is a famous painting of LeRoy Neiman picturing Frank Sinatra at his table at Rao's.

So, there are low chances for a regular person to get a place at Rao's restaurant. However, if you want to try Rao's recipes, you can find them in supermarkets. Try the lovely pasta products, the delicious sauces or the Rao special olive oil.

Rao's restaurants have also opened another restaurant in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The event took place at the beginning of December 2006, and the place will surely be as successful as the one in New York. Place your bets on who's going to purchase the tables at this location.

Rao's restaurant is definitely an attraction in New York as it is an elite place to eat out and it has a strong name among its regular guests. For those who did not have the chance to eat at Rao's, this place is still a location crammed with history, as famous V.I.P.s such as Frank Sinatra have spent time eating the great dishes prepared by the Rao family. So, whenever you are in Harlem, New York, take a look at the Rao's Restaurant.
