Published On: Dec 26, 2006

The Tavern on the Green is a special place in the heart of New York where you can experience all sorts of culinary curiosities and have a good time. The Tavern on the Green is located in Central Park at West 67th street.

The Tavern has an interesting story. At the very beginning in 1870, the Tavern, built in the rural Victorian Gothic style, was supposed to house 200 South Down sheep. The building was designed by Jacob Wrey Mould. The Tavern on the Green housed sheep up till 1934, when Robert Moses has settled that the Tavern should be a restaurant. In the 30s and 40s, the Tavern was one of Central Parks newest and hottest attraction.

In 1974, Warner LeRoy, the inventor of the revolutionary Maxwell's Plum, was the one to take over the restaurant and made improvements to it of over $10 million. Warner LeRoy succeeded in finishing the restaurant and opened it in 1976, and it is still up and running nowadays, being one of the most profitable restaurants in the US.

Currently, the Tavern on the Green is an enormous cafe with a lovely view to the Central Park. You can dine here surrounded by crystal chandeliers, expensive mirrors and stained glass. This luxurious setting will surely make you feel spoiled and might give you the impression of being in a fantasyland with fabulous food. Critics love this place and they say it is the Wizard of Oz's restaurant.

The menu at the Tavern on the Green includes miscellaneous recipes from America and all over the globe. There are meat dishes, or fish specialties for those who like them. There are also several pasta delicious recipes that are waiting for you to try them.

Some of the highlights of the menu include Lobster Bisque with Tarragon Creme Fraiche, daily selection of regional oysters; roast prime rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, Yukon gold mashed potatoes, and creamy horseradish. These are recommended by the chef and are actually very popular among the regular guests at the Tavern on the Green.

In the warmer season, starting from May and until September, you can enjoy the outdoor garden of the Tavern on the Green. Try some of the cocktails and relax while looking at the beautiful setting.

The indoor place has a capacity of maximum 1500 seats spread in six large dining rooms, and it would be a good idea to make a reservation beforehand, as this is the favorite location for many New Yorkers. You might be seeing some stars as well, because they enjoy this place very much.
