Day One - Trip to San Francisco

Published On: Jan 17, 2007
Are you ready to explore San Francisco?

Start the day with a trip to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. If you're here on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday there's a huge outdoor market filled with delectable local produce. If not, everyday of the week the Ferry Plaza is chock full of bistros, boutiques and food vendors.

Stroll through the marketplace and pick up an espresso or tasty egg dish for breakfast. Then take it outside to the benches that overlook the magnificent bay. This is especially grand in the morning hours as the rising sun softly hits scene.

Ride the Cable Cars
After breakfast, meander over to Union Square. If you're a shopper, this is a great place to peruse. If not, a mere wander-by is just as stellar. When you get to Powell Street, hop on a signature San Francisco cable car. As you 'cable' through the streets take in the diverse architecture as it rolls up and down. Along the way, you'll notice the streets getting progressively steeper until you feel like you're at the top of a gargantuan rollercoaster. This is the perfect chance to take a few snap shots of the city that lurks below.

Tour Alcatraz
Hop off the cable car at the Fisherman's Wharf and choose your splendor. There are a variety of different tours and cruises to choose from including the popular Alcatraz tour. Your can either venture to the island itself and stroll around the former high-security prison or take a cruise around the Bay. Keep in mind; if you plan on doing the Alcatraz tour, it's strongly advised that you book in advance because this tour fills up fast.

North Beach - Italian Community
Another option is North Beach. Rich in Italian culture, this eclectic San Francisco neighborhood has some great restaurants. On Saturdays you can tour the streets and learn about the area's history with local food guru Grace Ann Walden.

Dinner
The fine dining options in San Francisco are limitless. One great choice for tonight is the Zuni Café. Heralded as one of the best in the city, you can find some yummy chicken dishes, pizza and more. Another tasty choice is the Delfina featuring homemade pasta dishes and their signature roast chicken with wild mushrooms.
