Day Two - Trip to San Francisco |
Published On: Jan 17, 2007 San Francisco's eclectic neighborhoods are an integral part of the culture, and one of the most widely-recognized areas is Chinatown. On day two you'll get to explore this fascinating Asian realm.
Dim Sum Breakfast
For breakfast or brunch, the dim sum at Yank Sing is some of the city's best. As quantified carts of dim sum roll on by, choose from various pork, shrimp, beef and veggie dumplings. If you're real daring try the Peking duck served with feet included.
San Francisco's Historic Chinatown
After you eat, stroll down the slender streets of Chinatown. The entranceway at Grant and Bush resembles a trifecta of green awning-type structures. As you meander inside it's as if you've been transported straight to Asia. All around you are tightly packed vegetable stands, stores, tea shops, vendors and Chinese lanterns atop dragons poised as streetlights. Peer up at the buildings and you'll see the sidewall adorned with intricate Chinese writings. To further explore the culture and history, there's a great walking tour that brings you past Buddhist temples and teaches you the community's history.
Asian Art Museum
After you've explore Chinatown, check out the Asian Art Museum by the civic center. Home to one of the largest collections of Asian art in the Western world, this fascinating museum spans over 6,000 years of Asian culture, art and history. Peruse Korean silk patchwork from the 1950's, ceramics from the Neolithic period, bronze sculptures from the 1700's, Hindu deities from 1000 to 1100, earthenware from 250-600 and much more.
Dinner
This evening you're in for a real treat. Start off with a cool aperitif at the Top of the Mark Bar. Some of the best views in all of San Francisco can be seen from up here. Then head over to one of the areas best French restaurants, Campton Place. If you're not sure what to get, the Tai snapper is delicious.
